The first IR photos that I took and that I was satisfied with were taken with a dark pink gel that I found outside of a theater. This was before I had any meaning full contact with the internet infrared community. I remember looking for a way to have blue skies straight out of camera. The red, yellow and green filters I had at the time couldn't take me there.

I tried tried the dark pink gel for that purpose. It was extremely worn out but I could cut small pieces of it and fit it between the camera body and the lens.

Here's what I got with it :

LEE Gels is pretty much all that you need.

I'll never know what gel this was exactly but the closest match I found in the LEE swatchbook was "Smokey Pink".

Nowadays I use all sorts IR blockers to get deeper colors but 6 years ago I didn't know they existed so I naturally found a way around to retain as much color variation as possible.

If you cannot limit IR with a GRB_ or a DB___ you can still choose gels that passes relatively high amounts of visible light. I found the lighter gels were the ones who retained the most colors.

Here for exemple I think I used "Steel Blue" :

Blue gels give warm IR colors while orange gels give colder IR colors.

The next was one of my favorites : "CID to tungsten".

The difference when you don't use an IR blockers is that the luminance of the foliage will be high (in a typical infrared fashion) and you'll have to crank up the saturation slider to bring out the color details.

The color info is there however, buried beneath the IR. As long as you don't use standard IR filters (essentially longpass filters : 550nm, 590nm and so on...) and use colored gels that pass visible light instead, you will get colorful images !
